but not if they're in front of the DPS / skill upgrades and not if they end up being more trouble than the bosses / content they protect. Range = dodging time is much more lenient. Go look at the "no damage on bosses" youtube vids - he's obviously over-charmed using both nail + pride and fragile str, probably with nail arts. Soul Warrior is one in particular: totally face rolled the boss on first try - died to that one 5-8 times.
#Hornet hollow knight upgrade
Hornet / first Green Knight / Soul Warrior (before the boss when you've not got more than 1 nail upgrade / dash) and Watcher Knights all suffer from this - they're supposed to be Gate Checks for upgrades, but end up much harder than the bosses / content that they guard. Hornet should never have been boss #2, it's a difficulty spike that barely gets repeated (rolling / bouncing enemies due to randomness hit this badly though, even with late game builds not using fragile strength). This is a major design flaw, and makes the early game much harder than mid / late game. Later the game is much more forgiving once you've got the nail charm since you don't have to judge the ranges so exactly. The amount of damage I took early game from contact with enemies rather than actual attacks was in the range of 80:20 (doesn't help with an imprecise walk forward movement). the large bugs with clubs / early game green knights, esp pre-dash) - the controls let the player down, not the patterns. You can bounce off the needle with a downslash is usually my best advice for her fight.Ī major factor in all of this is that you start with a very small range and hit-boxes are dodgy, so you have to be very precise in your positioning (c.f. Some people can breeze past her try 1 or try 2, but lots of other people struggle fighting her. Originally posted by goo:I've been keeping an eye on posts, and it seems Hornet is a real hit-or-miss difficulty-wise. Hope this plan would help you enjoy the rest of the game even if it kinda spoiled the fun of figuring out your own tactical plan. I'm always a fan of writing big wall of texts instead of giving brief tips like "wait for opening" or "git gud".
#Hornet hollow knight free
Feel free to try it yourself thoughĪnd that's basically our plan. Don't actively attack her since we haven't figured out if it works yet. Both ground charge and air charge offer us the chance to counter attack.which means we need to stay far enough to dodge returning needle by jumping Returning needle means we can't stay at middle range.Ground charge means we can't stay close to her.

Now let's figure out our own tactical plan.
#Hornet hollow knight full
Good thing is the needle doesn't reach as far as a full screen. At medium range this is almost impossible to dodge. Returning needle: This is annoying since her needle does damage on both ways.Just counter-attack like the ground charge. This is easier to dodge since it takes her longer to start moving. Air charge: charging which starts in the air toward wherever you are.In case you haven't figured out: you can jump and attack downward. It's best to keep your distance and attack her after she charged. This is pretty hard to dodge if you're at close range. Ground charge: charge attack on the ground with a pretty quick start which goes as far as half a screen.

String defend: swinging her string to keep you away.Let's give our tsundere Hornet an observation: what kind of attacks does she do? You might have heard this saying of "learn the attack pattern". Given decent execution, a viable strategy will help you win the fight with a good amount of fault tolerance (read: you can take damage but still win).Īlright, back to the Hornet fight. Some fights could be solved by brute force, but there is always at least one "cleaner" approach. It's like solving a puzzle: once you figured it out, it just became easy. Well here is the thing: boss fights in Hollow Knight require both tactical planning and good execution. So, is the Hornet fight actually easy or difficult? Might as well go back to real life." A few days earlier I started a fresh new game and defeated Hornet (in Greenpath) without too much trouble. I was like "LOL I'm bad at dealing with girls even in a video game. You don't have much to do in Forgotten Crossroads (for now) anyway.ĭuring my first play through, I got killed by Hornet like 20 times.
